Course Expectations
English 1 Honors is a year-long, self-paced or co-op directed, high school course designed for all 9th grade students, strong 8th grade students who are ready for high school-level English, and 10th grade students who would benefit from a more foundational literary analysis, writing, and grammar course before moving into more advanced high school English.
This course builds and reinforces the essential skills students need for strong literary analysis and academic writing. Students grow in reading stamina, comprehension, and confidence as they study rich novels, short stories, and poems while learning to analyze characterization, setting, conflict, symbolism, allusion, irony, and theme. Grammar instruction is reinforced consistently and cumulatively throughout the year, helping students master concepts through repeated practice and application rather than isolated lessons.
Through structured writing practice, students learn to connect literary techniques to the larger meaning of a work and support their ideas clearly in writing. The course is especially helpful for students who need to strengthen foundational grammar skills, reinforce core literary analysis concepts, and grow in confidence before moving into more sophisticated literature and writing expectations.
