Course Expectations

High school students should be prepared to work independently, read consistently, complete weekly literature, vocabulary, grammar, and writing activities, and engage thoughtfully with AI-guided coaching. Students are expected to manage their weekly assignments responsibly, ask for help when needed, and complete their work carefully, honestly, and consistently.

Parent oversight is still important, but it may look different at the high school level. Parents should regularly look over student work, ask what their child is learning, and use the course as an opportunity to have meaningful conversations. Ask what ideas stood out in the reading. Ask what they are learning about writing clearly, thinking deeply, communicating truthfully, and evaluating ideas from a biblical worldview. Censova provides structure and AI-guided support, but parents still play an important role in encouraging accountability, engagement, and growth.

Course Overview

English 1 Honors is a year-long, self-paced or co-op directed, high school course designed for all 9th grade students, strong 8th grade students who are ready for high school-level English, and 10th grade students who would benefit from a more foundational literary analysis, writing, and grammar course before moving into more advanced high school English.

This course builds and reinforces the essential skills students need for strong literary analysis and academic writing. Students grow in reading stamina, comprehension, and confidence as they study rich novels, short stories, and poems while learning to analyze characterization, setting, conflict, symbolism, allusion, irony, and theme. Grammar instruction is reinforced consistently and cumulatively throughout the year, helping students master concepts through repeated practice and application rather than isolated lessons.

Through structured writing practice, students learn to connect literary techniques to the larger meaning of a work and support their ideas clearly in writing. The course is especially helpful for students who need to strengthen foundational grammar skills, reinforce core literary analysis concepts, and grow in confidence before moving into more sophisticated literature and writing expectations.
